Following this week’s final ordinary meeting for incumbent elected members (Monday, October 15, 2018) and in the lead-up to the close of voting for Council elections on November 9, 2018, the City of Whyalla is issuing a reminder about its Election Caretaker Policy.
Pursuant to 91A of the Local Government (Elections) Act 1999, Council must prepare and adopt a caretaker policy governing the conduct of the Council and its staff during the election period.
The caretaker policy includes rules about media and, particularly, social media.
Under the media section it states, in part, that Council’s media and communications department must not be used in any manner that might favour an elected member or candidate. It also states that the public’s ability to post comments on Council’s social media accounts will be disabled during the caretaker policy period.
In accordance with these rules, comments posted on Council’s social media sites regarding the election will be deleted as soon as possible under Council's moderation process.
The South Australian council elections are run by the Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA). Any enquiries regarding the election from the public, elected members or prospective elected members must be directed to ECSA by phone on 1300 655 232. Council election information is also available at ecsa.sa.gov.au.
