There will be no drinking allowed at the foreshore

The City of Whyalla has declared the foreshore area a designated dry area for New Year’s Eve this year and next year’s Australia Day event.

The designated area includes most of the foreshore, Ada Ryan Gardens and the marina precinct. It comes into place at 9pm on Monday, December 31, 2018 until 9am on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

For Australia Day it will be put in place at 12noon on January 26, 2019, until midnight.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said the “dry area” declarations were designed to ensure the foreshore and gardens were a safe and peaceful environment that the whole family can enjoy.

“This was a move approved by the elected members and designed for the foreshore, gardens and marina to be a family-friendly and alcohol-free area for New Year’s Eve and Australia Day,” Mr Cowley said.

“There are plenty of pubs and venues around town, or even your own backyard and homes, to have a drink and enjoy the night.

“With our beautiful foreshore and gardens, we want to see as many families as possible having picnics, enjoying the playground and seeing in the New Year in an alcohol-free environment.”

“This also applies to our hugely popular Australia Day festivities that are designed for family entertainment.”

A dry zone has also been declared outside the By The C Concert on the oval at Whyalla High School from 9am to 12am on Saturday February 16, 2019.
