USABLE ART: An artist's impression of the cuttlefish mosaic seat.
Whyalla’s cuttlefish mosaic seat will take another step forward with a three-day workshop next month.
Work on the community project to create an iconic piece of usable artwork for our foreshore will take place on Saturday to Monday - September 8, 9 and 10 - at the Girl Guides Hall in Jessop White Park. Starting at 10am each day, volunteers are being sought to help with the next stage of the decorative seat.
Council Arts and Cultural Facilitator, Deb Hughes said the project was progressing “nicely” and the three-day workshop will go a long way to completing the impressive piece. Co-ordinating artist Karen Carr will be present to direct proceedings and volunteers are being encouraged to help out.
You don’t need to have any experience or even artistic talent. Full guidance will be given as the workshop turns into a real social gathering of people with a common community-minded and environmentally-friendly goal.
“You don’t need any particular skills, just a willingness to join in, have a go and contribute to this community project,” Deb said.
“This mosaic is like a giant jigsaw puzzle and sitting down to help put it together is an engrossing, pleasant and enjoyable experience.”
With artist Karen creating the face and front of the mosaic in her studio, the main task at the workshop will be to finish the tiles around the base of the seat that form different ecological themes revolving around our giant cuttlefish.
The project is a collaboration between the City of Whyalla, Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula, Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries and the Department of Water and Environment as part of Cuttlefest 2018.
“We don’t want to start too early, just in time to have a coffee, a chat and get stuck into this fun project,” Deb said.
“It really is a great social event and a chance to contribute to something for the community.”
