Clean Up Australia Day in Whyalla won’t just be restricted to land … there will again be another marine clean-up in Whyalla.
Whyalla Diving Services is organising its annual Clean Up Our Marina day on Sunday March 4 starting at 10am for a “couple of hours”. The crew from Whyalla Diving Services will be co-ordinating people on the foreshore on Sunday morning to tackle the area around the jetty before moving into the marina after the Whyalla Swimming Club’s annual Open Water swim event to clean the swimming area and around the moorings.
Organiser Tony Bramley said the marine day had been going for 15 years and they were looking to invite anyone, registered divers or not, to come down and help.
They’ll be offering free air to all divers volunteering on the day and free use of equipment when you bring along proof of qualification.
“We will have divers in the water dragging up crates of rubbish but we still need people up above to collect it from them,” Tony said.
“We’ll concentrate on the jetty first and then move to the marina, the swimming enclosure, under the boats around the mooring.
“You don’t have to be a dive person, just someone interested in keeping our foreshore and marina area clean.
“This is also about doing something for the community and our foreshore and marina.”
The marine day complements the Whyalla Clean Up Australia Day event at Civic Park on Sunday which gets underway at 10am until 1pm and the half-price dump and free green waste day at the Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre from 10am to 4pm.
Anyone interested in the marine clean up simply needs to turn up before 10am on the foreshore. Those interested in the land-based clean up can registered at Civic Park before 10am.
