UPGRADE IDEA: A picture of the BMX track posted by Whyalla resident Claire.

Council CEO Chris Cowley has applauded a constructive suggestion from the community to re-develop a BMX track in Whyalla

Whyalla resident Claire posted a suggestion on the City of Whyalla Facebook site to clean up and develop an old BMX track near Billing Street and behind the Steel United Soccer Club. The idea, complete with a picture of the site, received plenty of positive feedback and added suggestions.

“Who else would like to see this old BMX track cleaned up and open to be used like a skate park, even eventually adding a dirt pump track and more BMX track?” Claire posted.

“I’m sure there will be even more ideas that can be implemented. Please help support more outside adventure fun for Whyalla.”

Kym was one of many posting support when she said “this would be fantastic, I know my boys would use it”, while Careena added, “yes, an absolute excellent idea, I also think make it into a family park area with bbq, seating and a playground, picnic area”.

Mr Cowley said the suggestion and constructive support for the BMX track idea was encouraging to see and the sort of feedback Council loves getting as it continues its transformation of the city.

“A big thanks to Claire and everyone that contributed with suggestions … it certainly was a popular idea with a lot of people,” Mr Cowley said.

“It is great to have people putting up ideas like this that are constructive and have the potential to be a real positive for our community.”

Mr Cowley said Council operates with public money with strict budgets and planning process while following protocol with due diligence for any work it does in the community. Council must also take into consideration all the needs of the community with public consultation often an important part of the decision process.

“We welcome comments like this on Facebook and now need it to be submitted in writing through our official channels to be considered by Council and the elected members,” Mr Cowley said.

“So we encourage this group of people to get together and put together a letter to Council with this idea.”

Individuals or groups can submit ideas and suggestions via email council@whyalla.sa.gov.au or the website customer enquiry form http://www.whyalla.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=774 or by downloading the My Local Services app (which also has a handy customer enquiry form) or writing to PO Box 126, Whyalla SA 5600.

“Thanks for caring about our community,” Mr Cowley said.

“We look forward to seeing this and many more ideas in writing.”
