The City of Whyalla will be reporting every act of vandalism to the police

The City of Whyalla is continuing its fight against vandalism and crime after several attacks over the Christmas holiday period

Council has documented each of the incidents and reported them to the police.

vandalsThe Whyalla Child Care Centre sustained a broken window which will cost in the vicinity of $1000 to fix. In another incident, flush pipes were removed and broken at the Civic Park toilets which amounts to a bill of several hundred dollars.

A report was received from a resident about graffiti and obscenities being sprayed on the road and surrounds on New Year’s Eve.

In an incident of theft, several fence panels were stolen from the Loring Street playground which will cost more than $1000 to replace.

These attacks follow another disappointing incident where the new cuttlefish shelter at Point Lowly was vandalised with graffiti late last year.

Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer said every incident of vandalism to public property and crime was being reported to police and those responsible should be aware they “are” being watched and council will not stop in its campaign against these senseless acts.

“Those responsible for these acts need to know that we are reporting every incident to the police,” Mayor Breuer said.

“The people causing this damage should also be aware there are a severe penalties for these actions.

“We know the police are working hard to bring those responsible to justice and are working just as hard with community liaison and programs dealing with youth. Council supports these initiatives.

“At the end of the day, though, these acts are costing council and the community real money

“We will continue to put more security measures in place to stop these senseless acts and keep Whyalla a safe place to live in but this is money that could be better spent on projects that are going to benefit everyone in our great city.”

Mayor Breuer said council also encouraged residents to report all incidents of vandalism to public property to council.

This can be done via email to council@whyalla.sa.gov.au or by calling 8640 3444.
