The City of Whyalla has welcomed a $5m pledge for a sporting hub in Whyalla

The City of Whyalla has welcomed a State Government pledge of $5m towards a sporting precinct in Whyalla and called for all other political parties to match the commitment.

The State Government announced today that, if re-elected, it would contribute $5m towards a new $15m sports hub in Whyalla. The project would be contingent on the Federal Government and City of Whyalla also contributing $5m to the project.

sporthubIn a statement, the State Government said that through consultation with local council, organisations and the community, the state-of-the-art, multi-sporting facility would be built in Whyalla to provide multiple social and health benefits for locals.

“The community will have their say on where the sports hub will be built and which sporting facilities will feature at the facility,” the State Government said in the statement.

“Possible sites could include land at Edward John Eyre High School.”

The funding pledge was discussed when Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer and CEO Chris Cowley met with South Australian Government Minister Kyam Maher during a visit to Whyalla.

Mr Cowley said it was a positive announcement for the city but as it was reliant on the present State Labor Government being returned to power, Council would like to see the same commitment made by other key political parties in South Australia.

“This is great news and something Council would obviously embrace and look at seriously when it comes to budget projections and the city’s strategic plan,” Mr Cowley said.

“What we would request right now, as a Council, is for the other major players in the State Election to back this commitment up and make the same pledge.

“We’d need to know the Federal Government is on board too and then we can move forward and have some serious talks about making this happen.”
