Community input wanted on where to locate Changing Places bathroom

The Whyalla City Council is seeking input from the community regarding where to locate a new Changing Place bathroom facility.

The customised best-practice bathrooms offer those with disabilities a dignified and purpose-built facility.

People with profound and multiple disabilities often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. A Changing Place bathroom will help those people living with, or caring for, people with a disability to live a fuller and more active life.

The new facility will provide enough space to accommodate a person using a wheelchair and up to two carers as well as a height-adjustable, adult-sized change table, a tracking hoist system and non-slip flooring.

The Changing Place bathroom facility will be provided through a partnership between the Whyalla City Council and the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion.

Similar facilities will be built at the Adelaide Oval, Rundle Mall, Glenelg and Port Lincoln.

“Whyalla City Council is keen to hear from people about where they think this facility should go,” said Mayor Lyn Breuer.

“As a city and a community we have been especially pro-active in providing these sort of facilities and creating a better understanding of the issues facing those living with disability,” she said.

Mayor Breuer urged people to contact Council with their ideas.

In other locations, Changing Place bathrooms have been placed in open public spaces, at sporting facilities or in foreshore areas and other community sites.

Anyone wishing to suggest a location should contact council’s Ann Ryan on 8640 3444 or ann.ryan@whyalla.sa.gov.au or comment can be made through the Whyalla City Council facebook page.
