BACK IN USE: The breakwater at the marina after it was re-opened today (Wednesday, June 20)
The breakwater has re-opened for pedestrians at the Whyalla marina.
There has been no access to marina’s southern and foreshore-facing breakwater on week days for the last couple of weeks as strengthening work was conducted on the southern (sea facing) breakwater.
The City of Whyalla contracted local company Whyalla Earthworks to carry out a project to strengthen the southern breakwater. This work started on June 12 and was effective in shoring up this important access to maintain its safe condition and in preparation for the new jetty
The project involved carting in 180 five-tonne rocks to be strategically placed along the breakwater.
City of Whyalla Project Manager Landscape, Sam Bourne said the project had been a success. With the restricted access it was done with complete safety for the public and was finished sooner than expected within budget.
“We have put more appropriate armour (rocks) at key areas on the breakwater,” Sam said.
“This has increased the stability of the breakwater core and addressed the areas more prone to erosion.
“We’d like to thank the community for its patience in regards to the restricted access to the breakwater while this work was being completed.”
Council will review the breakwater again next year.
