Liberty OneSteel has informed Council it will be refurbishing its electrostatic precipitators over the coming weeks.

Liberty OneSteel has advised the City of Whyalla it will be undertaking a $2.3m refurbishment and upgrade project at its Whyalla Steelworks plan over the coming weeks.

The company told Council this was aimed at extending the life of the equipment while ensuring ongoing environmental performance improvements.

The work will be carried out on its electrostatic precipitators, the equipment used to clean air discharges from the steelmaking process, at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking plants. The refurbishment and upgrade will take place on the number two precipitator with work commencing on Monday, February 26 and expected to continue until late March.

The two remaining precipitators will continue to operate throughout this period.

“Although aimed at reducing emission in the long-term, the project will create the potential for increased stack emissions during the upgrade due to only two of the three precipitators being in operation,” Liberty OneSteel said in a statement.

“Liberty OneSteel will be paying close attention to balance the fume load between the two remaining precipitators in an effort to minimise these emissions and help reduce any environmental impacts.

“Should there be an increase in emissions, the impact is likely to be predominantly visual due to the height of discharge stack and the distance between the plant and the community.”

The company said anyone with any queries or concers relating to these improvements, or any other aspect of the steelworks’ environmental performance, was encouraged to contact Liberty OneSteel’s Community and Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Denise Sharp on 0447 039 358.
