It appears a female dolphin has been injured by the propeller of a boat.

The City of Whyalla has become aware of an injured dolphin in the marina.

dolphinReports of a dolphin with a deep gash just behind its head were received from the public on Tuesday, December 12. The dolphin is a female and still feeding a calf.

Representatives from Whyalla Wildlife Rescue have also been informed of the situation as have officers from the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources. A spokesperson from the wildlife rescue service said it appears the dolphin has been hit by the propeller of a boat.

Upon inspection this morning by the rescue service, the dolphin was observed to be still swimming okay and not in any obvious distress.

The wildlife rescue service will continue to monitor the dolphin and will call in marine and veterinary experts should her condition deteriorate.

The wound doesn’t appear to be bleeding at this stage and no vital organs are exposed but there is still a possibility further action will need to be taken. Antibiotics have been used in the past with injured dolphins in the marina.

Photos and a video were sent in to Council by concerned Whyalla residents Mariette and Jason when they noticed the dolphin as they were bringing their boat in late on Tuesday.

A further assessment will be made on Wednesday.

The dolphin’s injury is a timely reminder for people to slow down when entering the marina. The dolphins in our marina are a jewel in Whyalla’s crown and every effort must be made to look after them.

Council officers will be monitoring the situation and following it up with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Wednesday.

Council will issue further updates as they happen.
