It was a big thumbs-up to our parks and gardens crew from one of our Facebook friends this week.
Whyalla resident Megan Hopkins wrote on our timeline to say thanks for the council work crew that returned her son’s wallet. The wallet was lost in Civic Park and recovered by another resident who handed it in to a nearby council parks and garden work crew.
Not only did the work crew happily take responsibility for the safe keeping of the wallet, a crew member went out of his way to drop the wallet back to the owner’s residence prompting the heartfelt response from the relieved mum.
Megan was blown away the council staff would go out of their way to drop the wallet home. She was also forever grateful to the resident and the council workers as this act of kindness saved her son so much time and hassle in replacing all the cards and content.
“You are wonderful,” Megan simply said.
Parks and Gardens team leader Tyson James, right, said the crews always appreciated this sort of feedback and added this sort of service was just “what we do”.
“When the crews are working in the gardens or cleaning up rubbish, they often find things like wallets and personal belongings,” Tyson said.
“If there’s some sort of identification, it is a normal part of what we do to drop it off as soon as we can.
“It’s great that our workers receive this sort of recognition now and then and I know they appreciate it too.”
And not just our work crews deserve credit, a big thank you goes out to the person who found the wallet and handed it in. These sort of acts show community spirit is still very much alive in Whyalla.
If you’ve lost something while out and about in Whyalla, there’s a good chance it has been found by our work crews. If the item doesn’t have any identification, it is handed in to the Whyalla police station.
