Council and police are asking motorists and pedestrians to be extra careful when going out to see Whyalla's Christmas lights

The Christmas lights are shining bright around Whyalla with residents once again getting into the festive spirit.

It’s the time of the year where residents’ front gardens and house fronts become a sparkling delight of Christmas lights. So now is the time to hop in the car, jump on the bike or go on foot to discover Whyalla’s festive lights.

lightsThe City of Whyalla, in conjunction with the Whyalla police, would like to remind people that the normal road rules apply and those doing their own Christmas lights tours should be extra careful and mindful of others.

Police reiterate that road safety is everyone’s responsibility and urge motorists and pedestrians alike to take care and be aware.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said it was a wonderful time of the year in Whyalla.

“For many families, exploring the Christmas light displays has become a family tradition,” Chris said.

“Luckily there is no shortage of residents who dedicate their precious time and efforts to provide our community with some amazing Christmas light displays across the whole city.

“Christmas lighting can, however, create some localised traffic congestion and it is timely to remind motorist of their responsibility to drive to the conditions.

“In the lead up to Christmas this congestion may increase along with a higher than expected presence of pedestrians, particularly children so motorist are ask to be mindful of these conditions, to slow down, be patient and drive in a manner that does not compromise the safety of pedestrians or other road users.

“Pedestrians are also reminded to be vigilant of their surroundings and stay attentive, particularly when crossing the road and/or approaching vehicles that pass by.”

The Whyalla police supported this message and had an extra reminder that the normal driving rules apply when cruising the Christmas lights such as the need to wear seat belts and be aware of alcohol limits at all times.

To help plan your Christmas Lights cruise, there is a Facebook site being run by Whyalla locals to let people know where lights can be seen. Residents can register their property on this page and a map will again be produced to give everyone the perfect plan for their cruise.
