Who is Whyalla’s most outstanding citizen?
The City of Whyalla is starting its search for the person in our city that has contributed the most to our community and region during 2017.
Whyalla is a proud city on the cusp of exciting times with a strong community spirit and there are people in our town who have made great contributions towards this.
These people are the backbone of our community. They are the people who pitch in, do the hard yards for the benefit of others and never ask for thanks. You might not even notice them in everyday life but if you sit down and have a good think, you’ll see these people are all around and doing their bit without much fuss or fanfare.
Not only do we want to find our citizen of the year, we want to shout out about a whole range of contributors in our town with a comprehensive list of awards to be announced and presented in January next year as part of Australia Day.
The categories are Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Junior Citizen of the Year, Best Sports Contribution, Best Community Event and six community service awards.
“With these awards we can recognise the efforts of the achievers in the community,” Mayor Lyn Breuer said.
“There are so many great citizens in Whyalla and it makes me so proud when we hand out these awards and see the work and achievements of these people.
“We all know who they are and this is the perfect opportunity for us as a city to acknowledge these people and proudly show the world the contribution they make to the community and the region.
“It is truly an honour for me personally to hand out these awards and I am always humbled by these wonderful people.”
Nominations can be made on a form located on the council website http://www.whyalla.sa.gov.au/australiadaywhyalla
or at the council offices on Darling Terrace. Nominations should be 500 words or less and must be submitted by Friday, November 24.
The awards are judged by a panel consisting of the Mayor, last year’s citizen of the year, four elected councillors, three senior council staff and the first ever Whyalla Citizen of the Year John Holds who was awarded the inaugural honour in 1981.
More information on the awards can be found on our website or by calling Events Co-ordinator Rebecca Neilson on 8640 3444.
