There is an art to taking a “selfie” and tomorrow is the day to learn.
For those that don’t know what a “selfie” is - it’s a picture of yourself taken with a phone or tablet.
Professional photographer Sam Oster (pictured right) will be at D’faces at the Middleback Arts Centre on Wednesday, September 13 from 10am to 12.30pm to show Whyalla residents how they can capture their inner essence with a selfie on their phone or iPad/tablet.

That essence is being celebrated with 60+ Moments which is part of COTA SA’s ZestFest, an annual festival designed to celebrate, challenge and connect older South Australians.
COTA SA is the peak body for 590,000 older people in South Australia and provides a platform to ensure older South Australians are part of decision making by government on everything from income and employment to housing and health.
For its 60+ Moments digital photography projection, participants are encouraged to capture and submit a ‘selfie’ depicting what gives their life zest.
The photos will form the centrepiece of a community celebration on Thursday, October 19, which will see the images projected onto a significant building in Whyalla.
Tomorrow’s free session will provide participants with practical and creative skills to confidently capture their world, using apps to enhance images and content, composition and storytelling through imagery.
Participants only need to bring a mobile phone or tablet/iPad. ZestFest event coordinator Jayne Boase said 60+ Moments will not only create new images, but new expectations of our older years, boldly reframing the way we age.
“It will challenge perceptions of older people, their creative voice and capacity to contribute and provide an opportunity for individuals to express what’s personally important to them in a changing world,” Jayne said.
“Whilst people are encouraged to attend this fun workshop, we encourage any older person to submit images to be included in this unique event for Whyalla.”
To submit images people go here www.60plusmoments.illuminart.com.au to register and receive more information.
The workshops are designed for residents 50 years and over. For more information on tomorrow’s session call council arts and cultural facilitator Deb Hughes on 8640 3444.
