The pre-schoolers learned all about beach safety and had plenty of fun doing it at the Whyalla Public Library this week.

This week at Story Time in the Whyalla Public Library, the young ones learned about beach safety with the Whyalla Surf Lifesavers.

Jennifer and Mel came to visit and talked about swimming between the flags, what to do if you are in trouble in the water (raise your arm, with your hand in a fist and call for help), and what surf lifesavers do.

They also reminded the children about the importance of Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.

storytimeThe songs sand included A sailor went to sea, Slippery fish and Rolling all around.  The story shared was Banjo’s Rescue.

The craft this week was a very tactile craft, where the children used, cellophane and sand to create their own beach scene.  They had the materials to create their own red and yellow flags and pictures to colour in so it made the craft their very own.

Pre-School Story Time is a program for 2-5-year-olds to share stories, songs and craft activities. Parents are caregivers are welcome to assist as their child develops a love of books and participates in fun activities in the supportive environment of the library.

Each week there is a different theme for the story and the activity and sometimes there’s even a special visitor.

There is also a toy library at the far end of the children’s library for those that want to stay on a bit longer. There is a wide range of toys, games, musical instruments and kits catering for the early learning, recreational and development needs of pre-school children.

You can also borrow two items for two weeks.

The sessions last about 45 minutes and they are held during the school terms on Wednesday and Thursday 10.30am and also 2pm on Thursday.

For more information, give the library a call on 8645 7891.
