Council has immediately ceased selling mulch from its landfill facility as a result of potential asbestos contamination. The potential contamination was reported to Council by a concerned resident who had purchased the mulch for use in their home garden.
Immediate action has been taken to test samples to ascertain whether the material contains asbestos and Council has notified and is working closely with the EPA on the matter to mitigate any potential risks.
We are encouraging residents who have purchased mulch from Council’s landfill facility since March 2017 to take immediate action to dampen the mulch and contact Council’s customer service on 8640 3444 to provide their details which will be added to a database. Once the results are confirmed Council will be making direct contact with affected residents on further actions to be taken. Council will have the test results by 10am tomorrow – 8 June 2017.
The potentially contaminated mulch is not used in Council operations for any of our public spaces.
