The Namaste Whyalla Indian dancers are just one of the performers who will grace the stage and conduct workshops at the Gupta Family Group Alliance Whyalla After Pageant Fair on Saturday.

The local dance group is excited by the prospect of being on stage in front of a big crowd and then being able to teach people the art of Indian dancing. Namaste Whyalla dance co-ordinator Minu Bose said people could expect a colourful and exciting performance from the four performers.

dancers“We will be performing a dance style called Dappan Koothu (also known as Dappanguthu or simply Koothu)," Minu said.

"It is a folk dance and music genre that emphasis on percussion performed in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu but with the costumes drawing from many regions thoughout India, it will be a real mix of different influences.

“I know our dancers are very excited about performing this informal unstructured form of dancing and you can expect a very energetic performance.

“This will be a performance that will represent parts of India and I think people will really enjoy it.”

The Namaste Whyalla dancers are just as excited about getting the opportunity to teach people Indian dance as performing for them.

“It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, we will be there to teach you some Indian moves,” Minu said.

“Just bring yourself along and we’ll provide the music and the instructions.”

The Namaste Whyalla’s dancers are scheduled to be on stage at 7.15pm and will holding their dance workshop after their performance.
