Whyalla high school students have put their artistic talents to good use.

Six months of hard work from a group of Whyalla high school students is now on display at the Sundowner Cabin Park.

Tasked with painting a mural on a fence at the cabin park as the owners looked for something to promote Whyalla, a group of Stuart High School students set about putting a plan in action. This wasn’t just about rocking up and slapping some paint on a fence, it was a multi-faceted project that required careful planning.

muralGuided by the school’s Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officer Tamy Pond, six students put their hands up for the project with help from fellow students along the way. A business plan was put in place that contained all the necessary planning consents and applications for funding.

With the City of Whyalla approving the plans and putting funds into the project, a State Government grant was obtained by the students to get the work started. Student Support Officer, mentor and artists Stacey Brougham was then brought on board for the art direction.

It was decided to base the mural on the “top spots of Whyalla as the artwork proceeded to stretch out nearly 15 metres to cover the fence.

Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer was on hand for the unveiling of the finished product and she was suitable impressed.

“This is a really good example of what a group of talented students can do for our community,” Mayor Breuer said.

“It’s a project that has not only helped some young people learning new skills, it is a project that has definitely improved our community.

“It’s great to see these kids being able to realise their talents in such a beautiful, striking way.”

Tamy said the six students most involved in the project had really embraced it, along with the other students that contributed along the six-month journey.

“It was six months work during school hours, after school and during school holidays,” Tamy said.”

“They planned it from start to finish and with Stacey’s help made it looks so wonderful.

“All these students have produced something the whole community can  be proud of for years to come.”
