The Whyalla Public Library celebrated book week with its pre-schoolers taking to the theme of Escape to Everywhere.

They read the book “Nannie Loves” by Kylie Dunstan.  Ali and Christine dressed up as nannies, but both looking very different, because all nannies are different.  Christine was a more modern farmer nannie inspired by the farmer nannie in the book that we read complete with wellington boots and a floppy blue sunhat.  Ali was more of the traditionally portrayed nannie and even had curlers.

After singing “If you’re happy and you know it”,  “I’m a little teapot” and “Old McDonald had a farm”, and sharing the story, the children made some nannies (or grandpops) of their own, using wooden spoons, wool, textas, lots of glue and other collage materials.

Book week is a great way to remind people that reading with children is very important as it gives them lifelong skills. The 2012 census provided information that showed that nearly half the population over 17, have enough trouble with reading that it effects their everyday life, from taking medication, shopping and following instructions.

During the past twenty years research has made it universally accepted that reading regularly with young children is probably the single most important activity that parents and carers can share together to develop a child’s ability to read and write.

Sharing stories, singing songs and talking with children is so much more than a fun activity, even though it is definitely a fun thing to do, and making it fun is important. It is fundamental to the healthy brain development of children.

Pre-School Story Time is a program for 2-5-year-olds to share stories, songs and craft activities. Parents are caregivers are welcome to assist as their child develops a love of books and participates in fun activities in the supportive environment of the library.

Each week there is a different theme for the story and the activity and sometimes there’s even a special visitor.

There is also a toy library at the far end of the children’s library for those that want to stay on a bit longer. There is a wide range of toys, games, musical instruments and kits catering for the early learning, recreational and development needs of pre-school children.

You can also borrow two items for two weeks.

The sessions last about 45 minutes and they are held during the school terms on Wednesday and Thursday 10.30am and also 2pm on Thursday.
