Following on from the success of the first Whyalla Light the Night in 2016, this year's event will be held at Civic Park

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural Whyalla Light the Night march for Leukaemia, the 2017 event promises to have even wider community appeal.

Last year’s march attracted more than 50 participants and raised more than $1500 for blood cancer research. This year’s Light the Night on Saturday, October 28 has been designed to attract even more people to participate.

Whyalla Light the Night will be a very family-friendly 1km march around Civic Park at dusk. The march will have added atmosphere as it will happen at the same venue as the new Unearth Your Trash and Treasure event.

LightWinner of this year’s Graeme Jose Spirit of Whyalla Award, Emily Rawlings will be the emcee for Whyalla Light the Night while Mayor Lyn Breuer will kick off the proceedings at 6pm with the march scheduled to get underway 8.10pm. Registrations for the walk will be open from 5pm with lanterns available for sale along with glow in the dark shoelaces, wrist bands and finger lights with all proceeds going to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Light the Night is a unique fundraising event that brings Australia’s blood cancer community together in more than 140 locations to remember and reflect during a moving ceremony and short lantern walk.

Last year, more than 35,000 people from every Australian state and territory attended a Light the Night, together raising a life-saving $2 million.

Unearth Your Trash and Treasure have record breaking stalls attending their event with market and food stalls along with car boot sales which will be a first in a very long time. There will also be free entertainment, along with car displays, children’s rides, clowns and characters.

The Unearth Your Trash and Treasure event will start at midday and go through until 8.30pm allowing marchers to return and enjoy the last of the entertainment.
