Councillor Jenny Barnes has been elected as Whyalla's new deputy mayor

The City of Whyalla has a new deputy mayor following last night’s council meeting.

Jenny Barnes, pictured, accepted her nomination for the position and was elected by her fellow councillors at the November ordinary council meeting. The position of deputy mayor is decided annually with Cr Barnes replacing Cr Rick Santucci who did not seek re-election but will continue his work as a councillor.

JennyWhyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer congratulated Cr Barnes on her election and thanked Cr Santucci for his “excellent work” during his term as deputy mayor.

“I’m delighted to have Jenny Barnes stepping up to the role of deputy mayor,” Mayor Breuer said.

“Jenny brings a wealth of experience as a council employee for many years and I’m looking forward to working with her and all of our councillors moving forward.

“I’m sure Jenny will pick up where Rick Santucci left off with all the effort and endeavour he put in as deputy.

“Both Rick and Jenny are passionate Whyalla people and this transition will be a seamless one as we move forward together as a council and continue to build, and improve, our magnificent city.”

Cr Barnes said she was excited to be elected as deputy mayor. Cr Barnes worked for the City of Whyalla for 20 years, reaching the position of Tourism Manager before moving to her current role in administration with SA Health.

“It is an honour and very exciting to be chosen as Whyalla’s deputy mayor,” Cr Barnes said.

“We have such a bright future in Whyalla but it is also a critical time as we build the city on the back of the recent developments such as the sale of Arrium.

“I am especially looking forward to working closely with Mayor Breuer, all the elected councillors, the CEO Chris Cowley and all council staff as we continue to set, and achieve, some strategic goals.

“I will be looking to continue on the work put in by Rick Santucci and applaud him for his achievements over the past year in this role.”
