Grab the gloves for this year’s Clean Up Australia Day
Grab your gloves and lend a hand for Clean Up Australia Day.
This year’s Clean Up Australia Day event will be held on Sunday, March 5, with two dedicated registration sites.
Registration sites will be set up at Jubilee Park and Norton Street Park on McRitchie Crescent, providing greater opportunities for all community members to lend a hand on the day.
The council is working in partnership with Centacare Catholic Family Services Whyalla to bring the second registration event for the day.
Centacare is also assisting by cooking a barbecue at Norton Park for all volunteers taking part in the area.
The Jubilee Park site will allow participants to focus on cleaning up the large area surrounding the park, including the McDouall Stuart Avenue and Stirling Drive areas.
A free barbecue and cold drink will be provided to all volunteers who participate in this year’s event.
Whyalla City Council mayor Lyn Breuer said she hoped all residents would play a part in Clean Up Australia Day in some way.
“Whether you get your colleagues out and about to pick up some rubbish, or you participate as part of your school group, or you come along to register as an individual or group on the day, we all need to play a part in cleaning up our community for Clean Up Australia day,” Ms Breuer said.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a great initiative to encourage the community to lend a hand in looking after their city.
“Unfortunately we play a major part in the pollution of our nation, and it is events such as Clean Up Australia Day that allow us the opportunity to give our environment some much needed TLC.
“Clean Up Australia Day is also a timely reminder to us all that we need to look after our environment and ensure that those around us are doing the right thing by putting their rubbish in the correct bins and disposing of all large items and materials appropriately.
Registration sites will be open from 10am until 1pm on Sunday, March 5.
Local schools are also being encouraged to take part in a special clean up event on Friday, March 3, and businesses can get involved by donning the gloves for the special business clean up day on Friday, February 28.
