Flag raising ceremony to kick off National Reconciliation Week
A special flag raising ceremony will be held in Whyalla to celebrate and build upon the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
In recognition of National Reconciliation Week, Whyalla City Council, in conjunction with local Indigenous partners, is holding a special flag raising ceremony at the Whyalla Foreshore on Friday, May 26 at 11am.
The ceremony will also coincide with National Sorry Day, which recognises the past injustices and struggles for Aboriginal people.
Members of the community are invited to attend the flag raising ceremony, which will be held on the lawn area of the Whyalla Foreshore adjacent the Beach Café.
A free sausage sizzle will also be available for attendees following the ceremony.
Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer said National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day were important events in Australia’s calendar.
“It is important that we as a community recognise the past injustices to the Indigenous people of this land,” Ms Breuer said.
“Australia, and particularly the Whyalla community, is very culturally inclusive and diverse, and I take great pride seeing the steps being taken to close the gaps between the Indigenous community.
“I encourage the Whyalla community, particularly those with Aboriginal heritage, to come down to the Whyalla Foreshore on Friday, May 26 to participate in the flag raising ceremony and acknowledge the important role our Indigenous peoples have played in shaping Australia into the wonderful country that it is today.”
National Reconciliation Week will run from May 27 to June 3, with theme of this year’s event being ‘Let’s take the next steps’.
The flag raising ceremony will be held at 11am on Friday, May 26 at the Whyalla Foreshore.
