Results of preliminary samples show that there is no asbestos present in the stockpiles of mulch at Council’s landfill facility. Asbestos was detected in the samples tested from the mulch delivered to the home of the resident who originally reported their concerns to Council; however, testing has revealed that the asbestos detected is non friable and poses an extremely low risk if left in an undisturbed state.

Council is continuing to work closely with the EPA to undertake further testing of the mulch stockpile at Council’s landfill facility to assure residents that there is no contamination from the source material.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Cowley has said that ‘Council is reviewing their records to determine who has purchased mulch from its landfill facility and will be contacting all affected parties directly to advise of the next steps in the process’. Council is looking to engage an independent asbestos expert to certify that each property in question is clear of any risk from asbestos and will be continuing its investigations to determine how the asbestos ended up in the mulch delivery to the affected resident.

We are still encouraging residents who have purchased mulch from Council’s landfill facility since March 2017 to take immediate action to dampen the mulch and contact Council’s customer service on 8640 3444 to provide their details which will be added to a database.
