A group of Stuart High School students received a valuable insight into the world of employment with the Work Inspiration program held at the City of Whyalla headquarters.

A program, initiated by The Smith Family non-profit children’s charity, involved 16 students in a series of workshops, interviews, site visits and presentations from industry representatives over three days in Whyalla.

Facilitated by council’s Starclub Field Officer Alberto Salatino, the students went through an intensive three days of training which will provide a platform for their future working careers.

“The course gave the students a clearer path for the future no matter which career they were looking at,” Mr Salatino said.

“A lot of the students had definite ideas on what they wanted to do for a career but some of these were changed during the three days.

“It opened their eyes to the different opportunities there are out there and will provide a stepping stone for them when they do look to enter the work force.”

As well as presentations from industry figures in the city, the group also travelled out to various sites to get a first-hand view of local operations. This included visits to the Heavymech, Veolia Environment Services and BGC Contracting. These companies also gave presentations along with service provider Hood Sweeney, UniSA’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and the City of Whyalla.

Students were given a range of learning activities such as resume writing, interview techniques and developing career boards while also conducting their own interviews with industry representatives.

“It was encouraging to see the interest the students showed in the different industries,” Mr Salatino said.

“Not all of them (the industries) were for them but it gave them an insight into how different industries work and the one-on-one interviews were a highlight for the students and the industry people who participated.”

The students received a certificate for completing the course.
