Council commits to development of new jetty

Whyalla City Council has committed to the development a new jetty at the Whyalla Foreshore.

At its May meeting, the council resolved to commit up to $2.4 million over several years to build a new jetty.

The council has allocated $1.1 million for the jetty development in its proposed 2017/18 budget, and will seek additional funding from state government grants.

The development of a new jetty will allow for design options to be explored, including increasing the width of the jetty, extending the length, adding a wider end and the installation of seating and shelters.

The council will undertake extensive community engagement and consultation with stakeholders and user groups when considering the jetty’s final design.

Community engagement will include stakeholder meetings, a survey of user groups and the general community, engagement with the Environmental Protection Authority and coastal protection as part of the approval process and feedback sessions for respondents.

Council staff will soon begin the procurement process to engage a consultant to undertaken community and stakeholder consultation, engagement, and design works.

Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer said the council’s commitment to develop a new jetty demonstrated the council’s commitment to the importance of recreational activity in the city.

“The council recognises the cultural importance of the city’s jetty facility and we are committed to ensuring a jetty is reinstated at the Whyalla foreshore,” Ms Breuer said.

“The council is excited by the possibility of a new and improved jetty, and will extensively consider design options for the new facility.”

A build time of between nine and 12 months has been estimated for the development of the new jetty.
