The cadets from the Royal Military College - Duntroon will be holding an open day at Jubilee Park on Wednesday

The Royal Military College – Duntroon cadets are coming to end of their exercises in Whyalla and they will be thanking the community with an open day on Wednesday this week.

About 300 army personnel have been in Whyalla this month for two weeks of simulated exercises in around the city. This has involved vehicle check points, patrols on the street, major car crashes, ambushes, operations to secure key buildings and simulated combat situations with the firing of blanks.

armydayOperations Office Captain James Roberts said the residents of Whyalla had again embraced the exercises and welcomed the soldiers into the city.

To say thanks, the free open day at Jubilee Park this week will cater for young and old with displays, activities and information.

“It is a thank you for the people Whyalla and an insight into what we do,” Capt Roberts said.

“The community of Whyalla has once again been great  in welcoming us into the city and co-operating with things like vehicle check points.

“I think they’ve also gained a better understanding and appreciation of what these young people do and this open day will give an even better idea of what is involved in the army.”

Those coming along will be invited for a ride on a Unimog troop carrier (pictured), will see a vehicle check point demonstration, displays of weapons, vehicles and ration packs while the kids be offered the chance to have their faces painted in camouflage.”

Capt Roberts said it was also an opportunity for residents of Whyalla to speak to the soldiers and get to know the outstanding young people serving our country.

The day starts at 3pm until 6pm on Wednesday, November 22 at Jubilee Park. Further information can be obtained by Capt Roberts on 0429 390 137.
