Supplementary mayoral election called to elect new mayor

A supplementary election has been called, following the resignation and subsequent passing of Whyalla’s long-serving mayor Jim Pollock.

Whyalla City Council has been advised by the Electoral Commission of South Australia that a supplementary mayoral election will be held on August 8, with nominations for candidates opening on Thursday, June 23.

Voting papers will be issued to all eligible residents by July 25, and votes will be required to be lodged on or before August 8 via postal vote.

Acting chief executive officer Migelle Hiscock said the supplementary mayoral election signaled the start of a new era for Whyalla and the council.

“Jim Pollock served as Whyalla’s mayor for a long time and was a fantastic advocate for this city, so we are entering a new era with the prospect of a new mayor taking the reins,” Mrs Hiscock said.

“It is particularly poignant for Whyalla at this time given the level of uncertainty and the multitude of changes the city is facing.”

A candidate information session will be held at Whyalla Public Library at 6.30pm on Thursday, June 23.

Mrs Hiscock encouraged potential candidates to lodge their nomination form well before the closing date on Thursday, July 7 to ensure any errors could be corrected by the deadline.

While caretaker mode is implemented during an ordinary Local Government election, it is not applied during a supplementary election.

In the instance of a current elected member nominating for the mayor’s position, but being unsuccessful in their nomination, they will retain their position as an elected member of council.

Whyalla City Council ordinarily consists of nine elected members and a mayor.

The next ordinary Local Government election is scheduled for November 2018.
