Retraction: Ballot positions finalised for supplementary mayoral election

Whyalla City Council wishes to retract the following statement from its media release dated July 7, 2016:
In order for votes to be eligible, residents must number at least two candidates on their ballot paper.
Residents must vote for one candidate in the first position, and select at least one additional candidate to receive their second preference vote.
Ballot papers with only one candidate selected will not be eligible.

The council acknowledges that this information was incorrect and had the potential to mislead voters, and apologises for causing any confusion.

The council would also like to provide the following clarification for voting in the upcoming supplementary election:

Under the provisions of the Local Government (Elections) Act 1999 a voter need only place a number 1 in the square opposite the name of the candidate of their first preference to make a formal vote where only one candidate is required to be elected.

If the voter so chooses, they may then vote for other candidates by allocating additional preferences, commencing with the number two in the order of their preference.

Full instructions for voting in the supplementary mayoral election will be included in voting materials provided to voters between Tuesday, July 19 and Monday, July 25.
