MoU to secure region’s future

A Memorandum of Understanding to form a political agreement with the Commonwealth, state government and three Local Government organisations to secure the future of the Upper Spencer Gulf has been signed.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been entered between the federal member for Grey, state member for Stuart, state member for Giles, state member for Frome, mayor of Port Augusta, Mayor of Whyalla and mayor of Port Pirie.

The MoU is a political agreement for all parties to commit to working collaboratively to respond to the region’s distinct challenges and opportunities in a manner that best reflects community and government priorities and aspirations.

Whyalla City Council’s acting mayor Tom Antonio said the MoU would provide the framework to progress the economic, community and environmental prosperity of the Upper Spencer Gulf.

“This is an opportunity for the three levels of government to commit to working together to secure the cities of Whyalla, Port Augusta, and Port Pirie as regional centres that offer an attractive, quality lifestyle, and to develop a way forward to address the challenges we are all facing,” Mr Antonio said.

In supporting the purpose of this memorandum, the parties are committing to working collaboratively to implement the MoU, and to meet quarterly to discuss and consider regional initiatives, challenges, and opportunities.

“I am pleased that all three levels of government are committing to work together to secure the futures of the Upper Spencer Gulf region,” Mr Antonio said.

“Given the dire economic situation we are facing, it is absolutely essential that all levels of government make a commitment to our region, and demonstrate strong leadership for our communities by working collaboratively to implement positive outcomes for the whole Upper Spencer Gulf.”

The MoU was signed on Friday, April 15 at meeting in Adelaide.
