Hard waste collection service offered to all residents

Whyalla City Council will now offer a hard waste collection service to all residents.

The council has been working with Bedford Phoenix for the past two years, offering a hard waste collection service to eligible residents.

The previous service was offered to residents holding current concession or pension cards.

The council recently resolved that the collection service could be extended to all residents within Whyalla.

The council hopes that offering a hard waste collection service to the wider community will result in a decrease in illegal dumping in laneways and on verges.

Whyalla City Council acting mayor Tom Antonio said all residents had a responsibility to ensure the city remained neat and tidy.

“Unfortunately the council has recorded an increase in illegal dumping within the city, and we are hoping that introducing a hard waste collection service to all residents will put a stop to this problem,” Mr Antonio said.

“The council is pleased to be offering a free hard waste collection service to all members of the public, and we strongly encourage residents to make use of this service.”

Residents wishing to utilise the hard waste collection service can contact Bedford Phoenix on 8647 7700 during business hours to book a time for pick up.

Residents will be entitled to one hard waste pick up per property, per financial year.

To be eligible for pick up, hard waste items need to be able to fit in a 7x5 trailer, and should be large items, such as fridges, washing machines, couches, and other large furniture items that are not considered general rubbish.

The hard waste collection service will be offered to all members of the public for a trial period of five months, until October 31, 2016.

At this time the council will review the effectiveness of the service.
