Get back on your bike with the Supported Riders Group
The thought of getting back on a bike after many years might be scary, but Whyalla City Council is encouraging locals to take up the challenge.
Whyalla City Council has developed the Supported Riders Group as a result of funding provided by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure for safer, greener and more active travel in Whyalla.
The program aims to encourage locals to use more sustainable travel, and reduce car use, whilst also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
The Whyalla Supported Riders Group will have its first coordinated community ride on Sunday, March 6 beginning at the Whyalla Foreshore Motor Inn car park at 9am.
The seven kilometre ride will be of a social, non-competitive nature, in an effort to encourage locals to get back on their bikes.
Supported Riders Group coordinator Gail Rostig said the group provided residents with the opportunity to experience more sustainabile travel options, while improving fitness in a relaxed atmosphere.
“If you have a bike in the shed, dust it off, fix the puncture and get ready to go,” Ms Rostig said.
Three newly trained ride leaders will be on hand to support new or rusty riders to get back in the saddle.
All ride leaders are accredited, have first-aid training and have been put through their paces through BicycleSA training.
The Ride Leaders for the first supported ride are all cyclists who have a passion for what they do: Jodi Fraterman, Neil Meacham and Craig Smith.
Residents who would like to take part in the first Supported Riders Group can simply meet the ride leaders at the Whyalla Foreshore Motor Inn car park just prior to 9am on Sunday, March 6.
This project is supported by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.
