Exciting events planned for National Youth Week
Whyalla City Council and the Youth Advisory Committee are working hard to develop an exciting event for this year’s National Youth Week.
National Youth Week runs from April 8 to April 17, and local organisations are working hard to incorporate this year’s theme of ‘My community is your community’ into the local events.
Whyalla City Council’s youth development officer Gail Rostig has been working closely with the recently established Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), and has applied for funding to support local National Youth Week events.
This year’s major Youth Week event will be Diversity Day, with the aim of encompassing all cultures that live locally.
On Saturday, April 16 the council and the YAC will host a rainbow run/walk through Civic Park/Schulz Reserve, followed by a concert in Civic Park with young local musicians and dancers performing for their peers.
The event will feature an array of engaging entertainment, including a bouncy castle, face painting, food and drinks.
Youth Development Officer Gail Rostig said Diversity Day was shaping up to be an exciting and engaging event for local youth.
“The council and the YAC are working really hard to get this exciting event off the ground, and we’ve already got a lot of really engaging activities planned,” Ms Rostig said.
“We are collaborating with a lot of Whyalla’s community groups to pull this event together for the young people of our city, and attendees on the day will not only have a great time, but will also be engaged with community groups and their peers in a positive way.”
Nicole Gibson from the Rogue and Rouge Foundation is set the host the event, and will also be in Whyalla during National Youth Week to mentor local youth and work with them on building resilience.
“Nicole Gibson is a truly inspirational young woman, who encourages and mentors other young people to speak openly about their challenges without judgment or stigma,” Ms Rostig said.
The council, in conjunction with the Middleback Arts Centre, will be calling for art works focused on National Youth Week’s theme to be created, which will then be displayed in the Middleback’s foyer throughout the week and over the school holidays.
In the lead up to National Youth Week, the Whyalla Music Association will run a youth music mentoring program, putting local young people through their paces to develop musical skills.
Budding musicians interested in participating in the youth mentoring program are invited to contact Ms Rostig on 0447 570 401 to register their interest.
Further information about planned activities for National Youth Week will be announced in March, and organisations interested in participating in Diversity Day are encouraged to contact Ms Rostig on 8640 3444.
