Diversity Day and Rainbow Run to celebrate Whyalla’s youth

National Youth Week is just around the corner, and Whyalla City Council has something very special in store to celebrate the occasion.

The council, in collaboration with Whyalla’s Youth Advisory Committee, will host a Diversity Day and Rainbow Run on Saturday, April 16 in celebration of National Youth Week.

The event will be held in Civic Park, and will provide an opportunity for the city’s youth to come together to celebrate the great things that young people bring to the table for the Whyalla community.

Youth Development Officer Gail Rostig said the free event would be a great celebration of the city’s youth.

“We are inviting Whyalla’s youth to come along to this free day of fun to celebrate National Youth Week and the wonderful things that young people do for the community of Whyalla,” Ms Rostig said.

“This event will be something completely new to Whyalla, and is sure to be a lot of fun.”

Participants are encouraged to dress up in a colourful and crazy costume and prepare to get splattered with pretty powder as they make their way around the course.

“We want to see people getting crazy and dressed up to celebrate Youth Week,” Ms Rostig said.

“We do encourage you to wear a white T-shirt, so the coloured powder can be worn with pride as you pass through each station on the course.”

The registration desk for the Rainbow Run will be open from 11am to 12.15pm, before a participant briefing at 12.20pm, with the official Rainbow Run kicking off at 12.30pm.

The Rainbow Run will be followed by a spectacular day of entertainment in Civic Park as part of the Diversity Day celebrations, which will kick off at 2pm.

Entertainment will include performances by the Whyalla All-Stars, Stormfront Students SING, and Whyalla Hip Hop Dance School.

Xtreme Kites and Paddle will also be bringing bubble soccer back to Whyalla for the event, giving young people the opportunity to enjoy a round of the popular game.

There will also be a free bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, fruit stall, fun activities, and pancakes.

This event has been developed in collaboration with a number of local community and service groups, including Youth Advisory Committee, Whyalla Music Association, Stormfront Productions, D’faces of Youth Arts, Whyalla Apex Club, Whyalla Lions Club, and Mission Australia Whyalla branch.
