Bridging the way at Whyalla Wetlands

An exciting new addition to the Whyalla Wetlands has been completed.

A bridge joining two ponds at the Whyalla Wetlands has been installed, providing residents and visitors with better access to the various facilities available when using the wetlands.

Over the past few years, Whyalla City Council’s project manager landscape Sam Bourne and grants officer Ann Ryan have worked hard to secure significant funds from the state government to fund major upgrades at the wetlands, including the installation of the bridge.

A number of companies were contracted to quote on the construction of the new bridge, with Haylock Marine winning the contract and successfully completing the project within budget and using local steel.

Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer said she was pleased to see the bridge completed.

“The installation of this bridge will have many benefits, including providing access to central elements of the wetlands from the Lincoln Highway carpark,” Ms Breuer said.

“The bridge also allows people making use of the nature playground or exercise equipment to dash back to the toilet, or those enjoying a barbecue to duck back to the car to easily grab the sauce if they’ve forgotten it, without having to walk all the way back around pond 4.”

However, Ms Breuer said the most exciting element of the new bridge was its quality.

“Oxigen Landscape Architects helped to select the colour palette utilized for this project, giving us a beautiful asset that compliments the now almost complete Whyalla Wetlands with the style and prestige that it deserves,” she said.

The installation of the bridge was completed with the use of local contractors and local materials, including recycled materials sourced from the council’s own Waste and Resource Recovery Centre.
