Australian Army calls for patience on the roads
Soldiers deployed on Exercise Hamel in the Whyalla, Port Augusta, Iron Knob and Port Pirie regions have a simple request for their fellow road users – please be patient.
As part of the training scenario a large number of military vehicles – including semi-trailers and armoured vehicles – will be using local roads over the coming days.
“We appreciate that our road movements will have an impact on other road users, and we are working hard to minimise the effect we have on local people,” Exercise Director Brigadier Mick Ryan said.
“Throughout this training activity – which is vital to the army’s preparedness – we have been grateful to the many local communities who have welcomed us, and these coming few days will see us further building on that relationship.”
Road users are asked to maintain a safe distance from military convoys and to be aware of changed traffic conditions.
“Our drivers are under strict safety controls every time they operate our vehicles,” Brigadier Ryan said.
“For example, we take the necessary steps to ensure our convoys adhere to the posted speed limits on state and federal roads, and to a maximum of 40 km/h inside our range areas.
“But we are also very aware that school holidays are upon us and that many people may be seeking to get away on holiday and so we are asking that all road users keep us in mind and take it easy with army convoys.”
