Anglers coming from far and wide to drop a line for 25th snapper championship
Hundreds of hopeful anglers have already lodged their entry forms for this year’s 25th Australian Snapper Championship.
Early bird entries closed last week and organisers have been overwhelmed by the number of entries that came flooding in on the last day.
Event coordinator Suzy Kettle said staff have been busy processing the entries, and are excited by the diverse range of originating locations.
“Early bird entries closed a week earlier this year, but are already on track with last year’s numbers,” Miss Kettle said.
“With increased marketing outside of the region and the steady number of competitor entries coming in, we are hopeful that this year’s competition will see an increase in competitors for the 25th anniversary.”
Miss Kettle said competitors from far and wide had already lodged their applications, ready to make the trip to Whyalla for the Easter long weekend.
“We have received entries from returning competitors, including reigning champion Wayne Barry, who will be returning to the event later this month to have a shot at winning the title back to back,” Miss Kettle said.
“Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula locals make up a large portion of the competitors entered so far, but we have a number from outside the region, which is great to see.”
Competitors will be coming from all corners of Australian, with competitors from Victoria being quick off the mark to get their entries in, and a number of keen anglers making the trip from Queensland.
“There are a number of entries from the suburbs around Adelaide, including both the northern and southern suburbs, with some competitors travelling from deep down south on the Fleurieu Peninsula,” Miss Kettle said.
“We even have a competitor from the Philippines.
“This year’s championship is shaping up to be an exciting 25th anniversary event, and we can’t wait for Easter.”
Standard entries close on Tuesday, March 22, so anglers keen to drop a line have about two weeks to get their entries in without paying the late fee.
Late entries will be accepted at the welcome briefing on Thursday, March 24 between 5pm and 10pm at the Whyalla Sportfishing Club.
