Electrifying workshop hosted at Whyalla Public Library
An electrifying workshop will be an exciting feature at Whyalla Public Library next week.
Richard Carmody will volunteer his time to host electrifying electronics workshops at Whyalla Public Library on Tuesday, December 15 for interested residents.
A teacher by profession, Mr Carmody’s enthusiasm for bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to his classroom has overflowed into the community with the open-age activity.
The technology and computing studies teacher aims to inspire an interest in science using the Arduino open-source platform, hardware electronic kits and five laptops.
The program allows participants an opportunity to experiment with computer programing and circuit design in order to create physical responses through objects in the real world including light shows, sound, music and movement.
Mr Carmody, a former engineer, plans to deliver the interactive workshop as part of the regular school holiday program to encourage the community, particularly high-school students, to embrace the STEM disciplines.
"The software is open source and the kits themselves are relatively inexpensive, electronics provides flexibility allowing people to carry out basic to complex projects and has applications in science, engineering or even in creative fields like art," Mr Carmody said.
“You write a program on the computer, send it to the controller and depending on what you entered, it then controls how the electronics works."
Participants can book in to either of the two workshops on Tuesday, December 15 from 10am to 12pm or from 1pm to 3pm, for more information and to make a booking contact the library on 8645 7891.
