Council launches historic reconciliation action plan

We are delighted to present the Whyalla City Council’s ‘Reflect’ Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

The plan seeks to strengthen the Council’s role in facilitating a united community approach to reconciliation.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan will pave the way for the Council’s reconciliation journey and provide a framework for creating an inclusive and respectful environment in which the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are acknowledged, shared, and celebrated.

This RAP has been developed in the spirit of reconciliation and acknowledgement of the Barngarla People as the Traditional Owners of the lands upon which the City of Whyalla is built.

As a Council, we will work diligently and collaboratively to create a prosperous future in which we all can share. To this end, we are keen to engage our community in respectful conversations to build relationships contributing to greater opportunities and outcomes for First Nations peoples.

As an organisation, we embrace diversity and inclusion and seek to ensure we respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. This ‘Reflect’ RAP is about turning our good intentions into action and contributing to ‘Closing the Gap’ ‘Equality and Equity’
that exists for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our vision of reconciliation is based on Reconciliation Australia’s five dimensions of reconciliation: historical acceptance, race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity and unity. ‘Equality and Equity’ Building relationships is important to engage all people in our vibrant community activities, educational and cultural experiences.

We encourage everyone to take time to truly connect with this plan, as employees, stakeholders and partners, and as members of our diverse community. The success of our efforts will be determined by the extent to which our business operations, the accessibility of our services and our mindset and attitudes contribute to the continued progress for reconciliation.

We look forward to continuing our reconciliation journey together.
