Lest We Forget – Whyalla’s ANZAC Day Service

anzac day
Council Member Peter Klobucar, Mayor Phill Stone, Deputy Mayor Tamy Pond, and Council Member Kathryn Campbell at the ANZAC Day Service.

Many in the Whyalla community came together this week for the Whyalla ANZAC Day services.

ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that acknowledges and allows reflections and the honouring of those who served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It’s also a day to pay respects and acknowledge those still serving.

The Dawn Service, March, and Morning Service were all well attended by the community, and we thank the RSL Whyalla Sub-branch and those that contributed to making this year’s ANZAC Day a success.

Whyalla’s wellbeing at the heart of the liquor restrictions

liquor

Senior Sergeant Marc Hutchins Whyalla Police, South Australia’s Commissioner for Liquor and Gambling Dini Soulio and Mayor Phill Stone attend a bottle shop to discuss the challenges with the local staff.

We’ve been working with Whyalla Police to put Whyalla’s wellbeing at the forefront of discussions about local liquor restrictions.

Mayor Phill Stone met with Commissioner for Liquor and Gambling Dini Soulio and Senior Sergeant Marc Hutchins, Whyalla Police in early April as part of ongoing consultation.

They visited a Whyalla bottle shop to discuss the challenges experienced by the staff dealing with the liquor restrictions in our community.

More information about the restrictions and the State Government developed App ID Scan is being shared through our community so that better understanding can help local bottle shop staff serve customers more efficiently.

It includes reminders to carry ID if purchasing casks, spirits or fortified wines and provides information about support services available for alcohol use.

More information about Whyalla’s liquor restrictions is available on the Consumer and Business Services website.

If you require further information or have any questions about the liquor restrictions or ID Scan, contact liquorandgaming@sa.gov.au

Dog owners are reminded of the dogs on-and-off leash requirements for the foreshore area.

- Before 8am and after 9pm during Central Daylight-Saving Time (summer) and,
- Before 8am and after 6pm during Central Standard Time (winter)

Dogs must be on-leash at all times in other areas of the foreshore including the marina rock wall, jetty and boardwalk.

Cuttlefish exclusion zone

Image supplied by Scott Portelli

The State Government recently announced that it will be permanently implementing the exclusion zone for the Giant Australian Cuttlefish as of 1 May 2023.

This relates to the closure zone that was increased temporarily last year, now spanning from the Mean High Water Spring near Arno Bay to the Mean High Water Springs closest to the Wallaroo Jetty (see the map below outlining the current temporary closure).

Thanks to Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven MLC and Member for Giles Eddie Hughes MP for their efforts to see this implemented.

We’ll continue our advocacy to ensure this heritage-listed phenomenon receives ongoing protection and is not compromised by any proposed developments.
