Whyalla open for development!

26 March 2024

The City of Whyalla is calling on potential developers and investors to capitalise on the exciting opportunities available in the Spencer Gulf regional city, which is on the verge of a green-industry revolution.

With the State Government’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan due to commence construction this year – plus other major industrial projects following close behind – it’s critical that significant housing and social infrastructure development occurs simultaneously to cater for the construction demand, while creating a destination city where people want to live and work.

To this end, Whyalla City Council has released its Potential Development Sites prospectus, outlining the numerous strategically-located parcels of land that are ideal to spark the urban renewal of the city.

Mayor Phill Stone said this was a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a development boom.

“With so much housing and social infrastructure required to support these once-in-a-generation projects – not to mention our growing tourism industry – Whyalla is set to become the State’s hot spot for investment and development within the next 12 months,” Mayor Stone said.

“From hydrogen to rare earths; and green industry to copper mining; there are so many projects coming online that the city is crying out for urgent development. This is needed to not only support the project workers and their families, but also the additional doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals needed to service the expected growth in population.”

Mayor Stone welcomed the State Government’s announcement regarding an initial housing development as part of its regional Economic Summit, which he said was the first of many steps desperately required to meet the imminent demand.

“We’ve had ongoing discussions with the State Government regarding the release of strategic Crown land parcels for housing – and community and social infrastructure – so I’m pleased to see this first step in delivering housing for current and future projects in the city, as well as ongoing tourism needs,” he said.

“It’s critical that we continue to partner with the State Government and other investors on even further housing and social infrastructure initiatives to ensure the best outcomes for our existing community, while supporting the growth that will enable even more people to call Whyalla ‘home’ in the future.”

Mayor Stone encouraged all potential developers to check out the interactive prospectus and to contact Council to discuss their ideas.

“If you’re in a position to invest in our city, we want to hear from you!” he said.

The interactive prospectus can be viewed online, and is also available as a printable PDF. To discuss development opportunities with Council, please call Manager City Development Jodie Perone on 8640 3444 or email jodie.perone@whyalla.sa.gov.au.
