History Festival kicks off in Whyalla

Paul Mazourek at Musuem

The Whyalla Maritime Museum is celebrating its rich heritage with a new exhibition featuring previously unseen original artwork. Presented as part of the South Australian History Festival, the exhibition showcases drawings, paintings, and artefacts from South Pacific Islands and First Nations. These works have been acquired over the past 36 years and provide insight into the region's history and culture.

Maritime Museum Curator Paul Mazourek is enthusiastic about the exhibit.

“This is a unique chance to view some fantastic artwork," Mr Mazourek said.

“I encourage everyone to take a look at the exhibition, including people from out of town, given this is the only event in the Eyre Peninsula programmed specifically for the History Festival.”

The exhibition at the Whyalla Maritime Museum runs throughout May from 10am to 4pm daily. Admission fees are $16 for adults, $13 for concession, $43 for families, and $10 for children.

In addition to the exhibition, Mr Mazourek will be conducting a talk titled "After the Shipyards: Whyalla in the 1980s" as part of the History Festival. This talk will explore the impact of the BHP Whyalla Shipyards' permanent closure in 1978, which led to an exodus of skilled workers and their families. As Whyalla was built around heavy industries, the story of the city has been described as being continually in decline ever since.

The talk will take place at the Whyalla Public Library on Thursday, May 16, from 11am to 12pm, and is FREE to attend.
