Foreshore Café Works Underway

Work is now underway at the foreshore café, with Smokey Uppercuts and Whyalla City Council working together on innovative solutions to ensure the facility is operational by the start of summer.

A high level of construction work across the city has caused limited access to construction services for numerous projects, but Smokey Uppercuts Owner Dylan Laherstorfer said he would pull out all the stops to ensure the deadline was met.

“The amount of activity is great for the city, but unfortunately it’s caused a lot of difficulty for us in securing construction services for the foreshore café upgrade,” Mr Laherstorfer said.

“Both myself and council are conscious of the commitment to be open to the public this summer, so we’ve explored alternative options to fast track a café service in the area.”

As an interim measure, Smokey Uppercuts will set up their usual transportable cooking services adjacent the café, with meals and drinks to be served both inside and outside the café building. This approach will ensure the existing café building can be utilised while continuing to meet all the relevant food, health, safety and building code requirements.

“To everyone who’s eagerly awaiting a café at the foreshore, I’d like to apologise for the time this is taking – no one wants it to be open more than me – but I’m confident we can start serving our customers very soon,” Mr Laherstorfer said.

Both parties remain committed to delivering a café service from the location long-term, and will continue to provide updates to the community as work progresses.
