COMMEMORATING QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty The Queen passed away on 8 September 2022.

For 70 years, Queen Elizabeth the Second reigned as Australia’s Head of State. During her reign, The Queen visited Australia 16 times and saw more of this country than most Australians, visiting every state and territory, including two visits to Whyalla in 1954 and 1986. To read more about Her Majesty the Queens visits to Whyalla visit our commemorative page on the council website.

If you would like to leave flowers, there is a plaque in front of the former Foreshore Motor Inn, commemorating the Queen unveiling the newly upgraded Whyalla Foreshore in 1986.

For the protection of the area, we encourage community members to avoid plastic wrapping on any flowers / gifts left at the monument.

If you would like to leave a message of condolence you can visit the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's website to leave an electronic message or you can also visit any of these four Council sites in person to leave a message in our condolence books, which will be sent to Windsor Castle:
- Council Civic Building
- Whyalla Visitor Centre & Maritime Museum
- Whyalla Public Library
- Whyalla Child Care Centre

A public holiday for the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty The Queen will be observed throughout Australia on Thursday 22 September 2022.

Please note that the Council Civic Building, Whyalla Public Library and Whyalla Child Care Centre will be closed.

Re-opening on Friday 23 September.

The Whyalla Visitor Information Centre will be open on Thursday 22 September from 10am- 4pm.

LONG STREET SCHOOL BIRD BOX PROJECT

Long Street Bird Box 1 Long Street Bird Box 2

Our Open Spaces Tree Crew recently worked with some very excited students from Long Street Primary School to hang bird boxes in the trees surrounding their school.

The students made the bird boxes whilst at Arbury Park Camp and were very proud to see them going up in the trees surrounding their school.

Some comments from the students are below:

Why did we make bird boxes?
- Because it was a task at camp for us to learn to build things
- Because it was fun
- To watch the animals in their natural habitat
- So, the animals don’t get hunted

How are we going to use the bird boxes?
- To observe the animals
- To try and find animals that might be native to our school area
- To encourage more animals to live there

What would you like to get out of this?
- I would like to see a possum
- To see cool different looking birds
- To name the animals that live there
- To be happy and see birds’ nest in there
- As long as the animals live in there we will be happy
- For the birds to have happy houses

Thanks to Matt Rotherham, Open Spaces Coordinator, the Open Spaces team, and the staff at Long Street for making this happen.
