The Whyalla City Council are offering a number of fun, educational options to amuse the kids these School Holidays. From movie nights, book readings, science experiments, board games and even Robotics!

Clontarf students develop and design native garden

The Visitor Information Centre have partnered with Clontarf Academy students to design, develop, plant and maintain an indigenous/native garden in an area of the Maritime Museum gardens. The students are able to undertake the work and ongoing maintenance thanks to generous funding from Zancott Knight and additional support from Mission Australia. Mayor Phill Stone and Council CEO Justin Commons met with the team earlier today to see the start of this incredible project. We will post regular updates to show you how the students are progressing!

Cuttlefest Art Prize

The Cuttlefest Art Prize is now open to all residents of Whyalla! Closing on 24th May 2024.

The prizes are open to school groups and individuals to create a 2D or 3D cuttlefish or other local marine based artwork. These artworks to be displayed at the Middleback Arts Centre Foyer throughout June and July 2024.

Cuttlefest Art Prize

River Murray Pipeline Anniversary

March 31st marked 80 years since the first fresh water from the River Murray started flowing to Whyalla on March 31, 1944. The pipeline was crucial in the establishment of BHP’s Whyalla Shipyards and ultimately the Whyalla Steelworks. These pictures show the pipeline under construction; design engineer Hugh Angwin; the route of the pipeline from Morgan to Whyalla; and former South Australian Premier Sir Thomas Playford officially opening the pipeline in Whyalla. Unearth Festival 2024 wrap up

uneARTh Festival 2024 is over! With so many amazing events taking place this year, it was hard to get to them all. This three-year, full-time traineeship opportunity will assist you in gaining practical skills on the safe operation of plant, equipment and tools, and providing safe roadways and walkways for the city. This may include concreting and formwork, footpath, road, kerb and gutter maintenance and repairs.

Nature Studio

Nature Studio, formerly Drawing Country, is a free community art event which invites people of all ages and abilities to celebrate their local landscape through art.

Nature Studio will be hosting a session here in Whyalla on Saturday April 20 with a focus on Charcoal and Pencil.

Working alongside an experienced local artist mentor, participants are invited to bring drawing or painting equipment, cameras or tablets and to create a piece of art which responds to the environment and the artist’s connection to place. A selection of art materials will also be available for trial on the day.

Works are underway on the Cuttlefish Dive Site

Work on upgrading the cuttlefish dive site near Point Lowly is underway, ensuring it can safely cater for the ever-increasing visitors coming to see our unique and spectacular natural attraction. A reminder that the works will be ongoing throughout April, so there will be no access to the toilets or other facilities in the area during this time. Showcasing works at the Whyalla Child Care Centre

Have a look at this progress photo showcasing the last 6 months of work at the Whyalla Child Care Centre!

In the last few weeks, the team at Steve White General Builders have finished installation of the external cladding and soffit lining, glazing to windowed sections and doors, wall insulation and painting to external surfaces is over 75% complete!

As mentioned in previous updates, please be aware of the alternate access during the project and the changed conditions across the Child Care Centre site and surrounds. Anyone with specific queries can contact the centre on 8645 4030.

Work continues at the Whyalla Recreation Centre

Work continues at the Whyalla Recreation Centre, with great progress now made on the sauna, including its new wall lining and seating being all but complete. The leisure pool beach entry has also been renewed and one of the new pool water activities is in place.

The next few weeks will now focus on tiling in the leisure pool and the spa area, plus the final fixes required in the sauna. Also be sure to keep an eye on the Whyalla Recreation Centre's socials for more detail on upcoming school holiday activities.
