As part of the South Australian History Festival, Maritime Museum Curator Paul Mazourek will be conducting a talk titled "After the Shipyards: Whyalla in the 1980s".

This talk will explore the impact of the BHP Whyalla Shipyards' permanent closure in 1978, which led to an exodus of skilled workers and their families.

Mr Mazourek’s presentation and video will shed a fascinating light on the former heavy industry operations of the BHP shipyards that, in conjunction with the steelworks, produced many significant vessels from World War II until the 1970s.

“My lecture will bring back memories for those who worked at the shipyards, those working at the steelworks now and the community as we delve into a fascinating period of Whyalla’s past,”  Mr Mazourek said.

The talk will take place at the Whyalla Public Library on Thursday, May 16, from 11am to 12pm, and is FREE to attend.
