Whyalla City Council appoints new CEO

Mr Justin Commons will be Whyalla Council's next CEO

Whyalla City Council has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer.

At a special Council meeting held this week, Council resolved to offer the position of Chief Executive Officer to Mr Justin Commons.

Mr Commons has an extensive background in Economic Development, Corporate Services, Major Projects and City Growth.  He is a registered CPA, Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) and Current Fellow Certified Practicing Accountant, CPA Australia.

Throughout Mr Common’s career of over 20 years in the local government and public health sectors, he has had the privilege of influencing the evolution of organisations; effecting significant change; leading award-winning teams to deliver iconic projects; actively engaging in stakeholder relationships; shaping communities; building the capability, capacity and resilience of council; and working with inspiring people.

Adept at managing multiple teams, strategies and projects concurrently, Mr Commons has a demonstrated record of success with the following career highlights and achievements:

Mayor Clare McLaughlin said she was delighted by Mr Commons’ appointment and is looking forward to working with him when he assumes his position in Whyalla.

“Justin has a strong economic development and project management background.  He has many years’ experience in local government and has been involved in business planning, delivery of major projects and strategic development initiatives.  He is an innovative leader and strategic thinker with a strong business and financial background.  Council believes that his appointment is a positive step for the city as we look forward to an exciting future.”

Council’s previous CEO, Mr Chris Cowley, departed the organization in December 2019.  Since this time Mr Kristen Clark, Council’s Director Infrastructure, has been acting in the CEO role.

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Kristen Clark during his tenure as Acting CEO” said Mayor McLaughlin.  “Kristen has provided ongoing leadership and steered the Council through unprecedented times as we dealt with many challenges, including the impact of covid-19.  We thank him for stepping up into the role and recognise his outstanding performance, dedication and commitment.”

Mr Commons will be relocating to Whyalla to take up the CEO role at a date yet to be confirmed.
