Its school holiday time and there is lots to do around our city! The Whyalla Public Library have a great program of events for children and families of all ages.

The uneARTh Hub will come alive from next week with a program of beach themed workshops and there’s the Whyalla Maritime Museum with a great new exhibition on display and an Aussie Animal Adventure for all to enjoy.

The Whyalla Public Library School Holiday Program

The Whyalla Public Library has a jam-packed program of workshops and activities that children and families can enjoy along with their usual Gigglepots program.

Running until the 21 January is the Summer Challenge. This is a self paced activity booklet that is full of activities to enjoy both in the library and out and about around Whyalla.  By registering to complete the challenge you also go into the draw to win prizes. You can find out ore, register and pick up a booklet from the library staff.

Workshops for the rest of this week include a Teddy Bears Picnic and a STEM activity where children will design and build their own wind powered boat.

There’s more fun to be had starting 17 January with a reduce, reuse, recycle activity, building a city scape and a Astronomy event with the Children’s University.

Free Summer Holiday Fun @ uneARTh Hub

The uneARTh Hub (old civic Library) on Patterson Street will be transformed into a makeshift beach and come alive with a series of FREE summer holiday workshops!

Starting Monday 17 January a workshop facilitated by local artist Michal Hughes will take place with participants using their imaginations and making creative sea creatures.

Tuesday 18 January is Beach Jars day, Come along and constructure your own mini beach inside a recycled jar to take home.

Keeping with the beachy theme on Wednesday 19 workshop participants with make a beachy wall hanging from items found at our local beach.

On Thursday 20 January the fabulous Ali and Chris from the Whyalla Public Library will be at the uneARTh Hub with beachy themed stories and sand art.

To finish the week off we have the 1,000 Hearts Project! Workshop participants will sew tiny hearts. The 1000 hearts is a kindness project which began in 2016 – making pocket hearts to bring comfort and hope to anyone who needs it.

The Whyalla Maritime Museum

The Whyalla Maritime Museum have some fun, safe activities and challenges throughout the January school holidays.

The ‘Aussie Animal Adventure’ is back and will be running 10am – 4pm every day of the summer school holidays, including weekends, with FREE entry for children in family groups.

This is a great activity for the whole family with the Aussie Animals hiding in the beautiful gardens and in the Maritime Museum.  Pick up your information sheet from the friendly staff at the Visitor Centre and let the adventure begin. Every child will come away with their own certificate and an activity pack to take home.

The Maritime Museum also currently has the Remarkable – Stories of Australians’ and their boats exhibition on display. Remarkableis presented by the Australian Maritime Museum Council (AMMC) and the Australian National Maritime Museum andis the result of a national project with workshops held across the country.

Australia’s history is populated with maritime related stories. With over 1,000 rivers and a coast that stretches for more than 36,000 kilometres, it is no surprise that Australia abounds with stories of people who have lived and worked on the water. This exhibition presents some of those stories, exploring the remarkable connections between people and their boats.

Entry to the Maritime Museum: Adults $15, Concession $12 per person. KIDS FREE in family groups. Museum is open 10-4pm every day. Access and Tours of the HMAS Whyalla are at 11.30am & 1.30pm daily. A selection of the Remarkable – Stories of Australians’ and Their Boats exhibition

If you can’t make it to workshop in person that’s ok the Whyalla City Council are also offering FREE take home Kite-making packs! Each pack contains all you need to make your own easy fly kite.

The kites used are Delta kites, invented in the 1940’s, by an architect by the name of Wilbur Green, he engineered his kites to fly high, and with very little wind! These kites are prefect for everyone, including beginners and the professional kite fliers out there.

Kite making packs can be collected from the Whyalla Public Library and Civic Building. Limited packs available so get in quick. When your done decorating and constructing your kites we would love to see them and share them on our Facebook page.
