More protection for our beloved Giant Cuttlefish

The Giant Australian Cuttlefish have started to arrive, with the underwater activity expected to ramp up in the coming weeks!

Adding to the excitement is the announcement by PIRSA of the temporary increase to the closure zone, which is great news for our favourite cephalopods.

The temporary closure zone has increased to prevent fishing of cuttlefish in the Spencer Gulf, spanning from the Mean High Water Spring near Arno Bay to the Mean High Water Springs closest to Wallaroo Jetty (see the map below). It is currently in place until 13 May 2023.

This also includes an exclusion zone for fishing all cephalopods between the BHP Jetty , the Port Bonython Jetty and the Point Lowly Lighthouse.

Mayor Clare McLaughlin - who is also a member of the Giant Cuttlefish Working Group - said the group had been advocating for the increase in the closure zone, so this announcement was a step in the right direction.

“This is great news for this unique natural phenomenon, which is of not only national, but global importance, as it can’t be found anywhere else in the world,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“We will keep advocating for a host of other measures that will help ensure people from around the world can continue to enjoy this great spectacle for years to come

With the cuttlefish arrival numbers growing, business is starting to increase, with locals and visitors to the city getting out to Stony Point to get a glimpse of the cuttlefish in action. We’ll have further updates soon on how you can get a glimpse of the action!
